A Telemedicine Approach to the Treatment of Binge Eating Disorder and Obesity
Code S15 :: Seminar Session :: 1.50 CE hours
Binge eating disorder (BED) and obesity are both poorly treated. Most approaches to treatment are based on antiquated or fictitious beliefs that weight loss should be the primary goal of treatment. Two in 3 individuals who are obese actually have Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and many experience emotional eating and identify as having a food addiction – all may be part of the spectrum of eating disorders and more common than anorexia and bulimia combined. There are many barriers to treatment for both BED and obesity that can be addressed using a telemedicine approach in which clients can access expert care from the privacy of their homes using their smartphone, tablet or computer. This approach may allow access to an expert, non-diet approach that will lower health risks through the development of healthy lifestyle behaviors.
- Discuss the research supporting the use of telemedicine for treatment of behavioral and mental health issues.
- Identify key principles and cautions of telemedicine use with eating disorder patients.
- Discuss strategies for treating binge eating disorder and other eating addictions that are appropriate to be used in a telemedicine program.
